Description
Adoni is a business town in Kurnool district in the state of Andhra Pradesh. It has a rich historical heritage and is an intriguing town for tourists with historical interests. Adoni is located at a distance of 225 kilometers from Hyderabad and 494 kilometers from Chennai by rail.
Adoni was once a place of strategic importance for the medieval Vijayanagar Empire. This city was under the rule of the Yadavas in the 16th century and hence its earlier name Yadavagiri. This name was however changed to Adavani during the subsequent Islamic rule. Finally this name was again changed to a shorter Adoni. Many wars were fought in the 18th century and Adoni came under the purview of the Nizam of Hyderabad soon after a war between the British East India Company and Tipu Sultan. During British rule, Adoni was in Bellary district of the Madras Presidency.
Adoni is known as the grain market of the south. It has abundant cotton mills and is famous for cloth. The cotton trading is also prominent. Apart from cotton, the groundnut and sunflower trading is well established with a chain of oil mills throughout the city. It is also famous for the gold market. Due to textile potential it is affectionately called as the Second Mumbai.
The major languages spoken in the city of Adoni are Telugu, Kannada and Urdu. The culture is a blend of Karnataka and Andhra cultures. It has the oldest municipality which was constituted way back in the year 1865.
